How We Test & Review Pet Gear

By PawPicks Team · Updated November 2026

Most pet-gear "review" sites rank whatever pays the highest commission. We started PawPicks because we were tired of that. Here's exactly how our recommendations are made — so you can decide whether to trust them.

Our research process

Every guide on this site starts with 15–20+ hours of research before a single product is picked:

What earns a recommendation

A product makes a PawPicks list when it does its core job reliably, holds up over time, and is worth its price for a specific kind of pet or owner. That's why every pick has a label like "Best for Heavy Chewers" or "Best Budget Pick" — the best harness for a 70-lb puller is the wrong harness for a 10-lb senior dog.

What we don't do

Never on PawPicks

  • Sponsored placements or paid rankings
  • Free products from manufacturers in exchange for coverage
  • Ranking products by commission rate
  • "Reviews" of products nobody has actually used

Always on PawPicks

  • Picks chosen before we ever look at affiliate programs
  • Downsides listed for every single product
  • Budget alternatives alongside premium picks
  • Updates when products are recalled or discontinued

How we make money

When you buy through links on PawPicks, we may earn a small commission from the retailer — at no extra cost to you. The commission never affects what we recommend: products are chosen first, links are added after. Full details in our affiliate disclosure.

Keeping reviews current

Pet gear changes fast — models get discontinued, formulas change, prices move. We revisit our guides regularly and update picks when something better comes along or a recommended product starts showing problems. Every article shows its last-updated date at the top.
